WHEN FASHION GETS SERIOUS: KRISTEN MCMENAMY, PETER LINDBERGH AND VOGUE ITALIA TAKE ON THE GULF OIL SPILL

Powerful

Powerful

Nothing pretty or glamorous about this

Nothing pretty or glamorous about this

This actually made me catch my breath.

This actually made me catch my breath.

Super ugly

Take some time to think about it ...

A mermaid in trouble.

...a mermaid in trouble...

Oh Jeez, it hurts my eyes.

...the fashion shoot, as often, wasteful and mad ...

But, the Philistine asked in a very small voice ...

..but in this case ...

...what does this have to do with ...

it's thought-provoking and perhaps ...

...fashion?

...even important?

This editorial, by Peter Lindbergh, for Vogue Italia, is special.

Stark and powerful.

If you were a fashion magazine and you wanted to make a comment on the tragedy that has seen untold billion barrels of oil seep into the Gulf of Mexico (and, lest we forget, also seeps into the sea off Nigeria, every day) what else would you say?

In this instance, the supreme silliness of many fashion shoots- the wastefulness of ruining such expensive clothing, the ridiculousness of placing a model in ludicrous situations – makes nightmarish sense.

This story is where the wastefulness, hubris and insanity of two very different industries collide to make a powerful political statement.

The image of McMenamy’s hand as an oil-stained seabird will stay with me for a long time.

It’s not about flogging clothes.

And in this case, that doesn’t bother me at all.

Wow! Really didn’t think the oil spill will have an effect on the fashion industry!

It’s one of the most talked-about subjects for the last three months – if the fashion industry didn’t make a comment about it, they would appear to be uninvolved in topical issues.
I’d like to know, though, how much these magazines actually devote to greening and all of that? Comment without action?
