THE GOOD AND THE BAD OF PADMA LAKSHMI’S INDIA VOGUE COVER.

by hurricanevanessa on December 30, 2010

Here she is.

On the plus side, she is, on this cover, if not authentically flesh-coloured, at least somewhat less Vanilla-hued, than ELLE India’s controversial cover of Aishwayriya Rai Buchchan. See here for comparison, should you want to be blinded, just a little.

So jolly good for VI. Three Photoshops of Horror cheers. You’re on the right track guys.

But then, it all goes just a bit Daily Mail.

It’s the Vogue India “Shape” issue. And Ms Lakshmi has a baby (“baby, body, beauty, brand” in case you were in any doubt as to what constitutes her value to the magazine) she has, of course, got her Pre-baby body back. (“Wow!” “Splendiferous!”"Gasp!)

The not-so hidden mesage in this cover?

Just had a baby? Get yourself off to a “New Year Boot camp,” as fast as your fat little water-retaining leggies can carry you.

Learn “Secrets of the best bodies,” and you too, will look like Ms Lakshmi, no matter how many Top Chef’s creations you have to sample in your line of work (which is of course, not half as important as your body baby, beauty secrets etc.).

Y0u have to.

It’s that simple.

Minded.
