THE FIRST PICTURE EVER UPLOADED TO THE INTERNET.

Historic.

This image of 90s loveliness, bad lipstick, home counties ballgowns and cheesy posing, was the first ever image uploaded.

It’s a pic of an amateur chick group, called Les Horribles Cernettes, taken by an IT Developer who worked close to Tim Berners-Lee and the other IT Developers who invented the web and made it public in 1991.

And the reason this picture was chosen?

This from Motherboard: ” When Berners-Lee and his team cooked up a new edition of their still-primitive World Wide Web system, one that could support photo files, he went a few steps from his workstation to ask de Gennaro for a Cernettes-related image. The Web had already used a few small vector image files to show off schematics, but Berners-Lee and his team needed a guinea pig for the leap into photos.”

Up til that point the web was only used for text, and in order to test it, ” “Sex sells!” Groff, a programmer who worked closely with Berners-Lee said, said,  “It’s media. You put a pretty girl in the media, people will notice the media. And whatever is around the pretty girl? Sure.”

That much hasn’t changed.

At least.

Read Motherboard for the whole story.

Is it just me, or is 90s fashion worse than 80s fashion most of the time? It’s like, you guys, we just lived through the 80s, we should know better, BUT NO! Ugh, grunge beats shoulder pads every time (in a bad bad way).
