You might think that it would be rather a …bold career move, for an ahem… Queen Bee… actress, to embark on a project where she demonstrates the mating habits of the birds and the bees, wearing birds and bees costumes and using cardboard cutouts, no matter who you were.

If you were Hollywood royalty,  plus the star of such diverse fare as 30 Rock and the iconic Blue Velvet, as Isabella Rossellin is, you might be forgiven for believing that she had well and truly lost her mind.

But funnily enough, this adorable project, where Rossellini impersonates, an “expiring” bee, an “orgasmic” snail and an “angst-ridden” limpet is pure gold.

Rossellini writes, directs and stars in Green Porno, a series of short-films, for Robert Redford’s Sundance Channel, which explore the sex lives of creatures who do not often get the chance to …er…shine.

And they are charming and informative.

Her first season had her focusing on bugs, her second, marine life.

Was it fun? “Some costumes are more uncomfortable than others. The worst was the earthworm. I was in this 36-foot-long costume, and I had to stay in a permanent sit-up—or else they would be unable photograph my head—for hours!”
